Ploi: A Sculptural Light Inspired by Folding Techniques

Functional Art That Transforms Spaces

Ploi, designed by Jacqueline M Thenu, is a unique sculptural light that combines folding techniques and wire gauze to create a stunning and dynamic piece of functional art. Inspired by the geometrical elements found in folding techniques, Ploi brings a sense of harmony, volume, and drama to any room.

The inspiration for Ploi comes from the intricate geometrical elements in folding techniques and their dynamic characteristics. Jacqueline M Thenu explains, "The unity between geometry and shape can be seen everywhere, where everything has geometrical elements that interconnect within them and to others. The pleats in Ploi remind us of the vastness of the universe and represent the connection between distance, space, time, and other universes, which can be folded instantly like a wormhole."

What sets Ploi apart is its combination of folding techniques and wire gauze, which creates a sequence of translucent crease lines that compose harmoniously and give more volume to the shape as it expands and shrinks. The asymmetrical abstract shape of Ploi creates variety, offering different monumental shapes that can be seen from each side and producing different dramatic lighting effects.

Each lampshade of Ploi is meticulously created from a sheet of wire gauze, folded manually to achieve consistency in the pleats. The lampshade is then spray-painted for color and assembled with a bulb fitting and cable. The specifications of Ploi include a lampshade size of 330 x 340 x 550 mm, a cable length of 1500 mm, and a 40-watt incandescent bulb.

When Ploi is illuminated, it creates captivating shadows that give the illusion of more dimension to the room, making it more dynamic. This functional art piece was exhibited in Casa Indonesia 2016 at The Ritz-Carlton Jakarta, Pacific Place, showcasing its unique design and craftsmanship.

Ploi was the result of extensive research and experimentation. Jacqueline M Thenu conducted trials and errors to understand the characteristics of pleats and the possible shapes that could be created. Starting with paper, she explored symmetrical and asymmetrical shapes before applying the folding technique to other materials such as plastic, cloth, and wire gauze. The wire gauze proved to be the easiest to fold and strong enough to withstand the design's intricate pleats.

In recognition of its outstanding design and creative ingenuity, Ploi was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures Design category in 2017. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place.

Ploi is a testament to the creativity of craftsmanship, showcasing the possibilities that arise when material and technique are combined to create a unified design. With its sculptural form and captivating lighting effects, Ploi adds a touch of elegance and sophistication to any space.
